Learn About Fitness and Fighting Hair Loss Over 40

By Scott Fisher

You may have never thought that one day you would look in the mirror and see thinning hair. You may believe that you are genetically predisposed to be bald, but this is a common misconception. Many people lose their hair because of poor health. Even if you are genetically prone to lose your hair, you can prevent it through fitness.

Weight loss over 40 is a must if you want to prevent hair loss. Scientists have shown that hair loss is more likely in the overweight and obese. Some of these cases are unexplained, but there are many which are caused by a weight induced hormone imbalance.

Your body is an amazing machine that works on a careful balance of hormones. You must have the right levels of hormones for good body function. If you have a hormone imbalance, one of the first body parts to suffer is your hair.

Male pattern balding, even in women, is normally from too much testosterone in your system. Stored fat releases testosterone, and cancer causing estrogen. When there is no physical activity, your body uses this testosterone inefficiently. The hormone is sent to your scalp and the conversion process causes your hair follicles to die. Therefore, the less extra fat you have stored the less testosterone will be able to cause hair loss.

Type II Diabetics are also very likely to suffer from hair loss. Very often, this type of diabetes is caused when extra weight induces a hormone imbalance. Diabetes causes your body to work harder to maintain blood sugar and insulin levels. This makes blood flow more difficult, increases healing time, and raises the risk of infection. When your body is working this hard, it shuts down unnecessary functions in order to survive. Unfortunately, hair production is one of the first functions to stop.

An unhealthy thyroid will also cause hair loss similar to diabetes. When the thyroid stimulating hormone is too high hair falls out. Another symptom of poor thyroid function is extra weight. Talk to your doctor if you are worried about your thyroid. However, fitness after 40 is a vital part of maintaining thyroid health and preventing related hair loss.

Scientists have proven that the unexplained cases of hair loss occur more frequently in the obese and overweight. This is probably because extra weight makes your body work harder. It places undue strain on your heart, organs, muscles, and endocrine system.

You have the power to stop and even prevent hair loss, despite your genes. It is absolutely necessary that you shed those unwanted pounds. Being overweight is a symptom of so many health issues which lead to balding. If you want to keep your thick mane of your youth then you need to start focusing on fitness today.

For example, whether you're male or female is suffering from your own respective pattern baldness, each one causes the suffer to lose hair in a certain way. It's very rare for a woman to suffer baldness the way a male would, with a receding line or bald spot at the top of the head.

Understanding the life cycle of hair is not that difficult. Basically, there are three phases. One is where the hair grows, the second is where the hair thins, and the third is when the hair falls out. At this point, I'm new here begins to grow, and repeats the cycle over and over again. However, when this cycle is interfered with, problems arise.

Male Hair Loss - What Can Be Done

By Anju Mathur, MD

The majority of American men will be aware of some hair loss by the age of 35. By age 50, nearly 85% of men will have experienced thinning hair. A quarter of the men who experience this loss begin before they reach the age of 21. And 95% of this hair loss is male pattern baldness.

Male pattern baldness interferes with numerous sectors of a man's life. It can change relationships and professional life. Sometimes men change their careers as a result. Most men who have it are not very happy about it and many would resort to just about any remedy to change it.

Almost every hair loss remedy on the market is about as effective as Dr. Jones' Medicine Show snake oil. Perhaps you've seen the infomercials on late night TV. Or the radio ads, guaranteed or your money back. Or the ads in magazines for men, promising hair growth that will attract a bevy of ladies. The ads are very common.

There are also a myriad of false reasons bandied about concerning why hair loss occurs. Anxiety? No. Wearing a cap (even sleeping in a cap)? No. Nutritional insufficiency? No. Wearing a ponytail? No. Excess sweating? No. Androgenic Alopecia or male pattern hair loss occurs for two reasons - decreasing androgens (male hormones) and genetic predilection.

Genetic predisposition cannot be changed, but if a loss of hormone production causes the condition, would it not make sense to replace the lost hormones? That would be a workable solution to hair loss.

Andropause in men is the name for what women call menopause. Besides hair loss, there are other symptoms as the hormones (androgens) decrease in proportion to age. Loss of libido, decreased muscle mass and strength, low energy, insomnia, nervousness and depression can also be symptoms. Muscle mass decreases and body fat increases.

Men can benefit from bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, just as women do. (Note: Bio-identical is an important word - it means the replacement hormones are not synthetic, but are identical to the hormones produced by the human body.) Optimal health is dependent upon the balance of hormones and not just one single hormone. Currently men with low androgens (male hormones) can benefit from the hormone replacement therapy. The therapy definitely improves quality of life and increases life span.

There will be other results in addition to stopping hair loss - lower blood pressure, lower risk of heart attack, restored libido, healthy prostate gland, and slowing loss of muscle mass and strength are a few. Starting hormone replacement early in life is very much recommended, although it can help men 50 or 60 or older. In order to start this therapy, medical testing is required to find out which hormones should be replaced and in what amount.
