My Hot Air Balloon Ride in the California Desert

Ballooning in the California desert cities of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley is one of the most serene and scenic ways to spend an early morning or late afternoon.

Hot air balloons are the oldest known human-carrying flight technology. It all started on Nov 21, 1783, in Paris, France, when the first untethered manned flight was made by Jean-Franois Piltre de Rozier and Franois Laurent d'Arlandes in a hot air balloon created on Dec 14, 1782 by the Montgolfier brothers.

Hot air balloons are now used primarily for recreation and there are some 7,500 hot air balloons operating in the United States for this purpose. Typically, hot air balloon launches are made during the cooler hours of the day, at dawn or two to three hours before sunset. At these times of day, the winds are typically light making for easier launch and landing of the balloon.

In the California desert area there are a number of hot air balloon companies, Fantasy Balloons, Balloons Above and Sunrise Balloons. On our trip we chose Fantasy Balloons. We arroved in the late afternoon preparing for a sunset flight.

After filing the balloon with hot air, we climbed aboard ready to float effortlessly above the desert floor. As we ascended we took in breathtaking vistas of some of the most picturesque landscapes in California. Vineyards, polo fields, world famous golf courses, and exotic orchards are just a few of the unbelievable sights we experienced.

Our pilot gave us a guided tour of some of the landmarks below, as well as serving champagne and cookies which I was told is a common tradition among balloonists. Legend has it that early French aeronauts carried champagne to appease angry or frightened spectators at the landing site.

The pilot's only ability to steer the balloon was to climb or descend into wind currents going different directions. So it is important for the pilot to determine what direction the wind is blowing at altitudes other than the balloon's altitude. The altitude and our direction was controlled by changing the temperature of the air inside the balloon. This was accomplished by turning on what could only be described as a large blow torch. Blowing flame into the balloon so that the air would heat and the balloon would rise. As the air cooled, the balloon would descend.

In landing, most pilots try to perform as smooth a landing as possible. This can be difficult if the air at ground level is moving at more than five miles per hour or so. On the day of our flight there was not much in the way of ground level wind so our landing was smooth.

We all enjoyed the flight thoroughly and it was the perfect way to watch the sun set over the California desert.

How Perceiving and Judging Spouses Can Get Along

The old saying that opposites attract can be all to true. However, what seemed cute, quirky, different and admirable during courtship can become annoying over time. When it comes to Personality Types the differences between Judging (J) and Perceiving (P) can be the cause of much frustration and fraying of nerves.

Let's have a quick review of P and J characteristics for those not familiar with Personality Type theory. P and J are choices on a continuum regarding how we deal with the outer world. J likes things organized and given a choice want to quickly come to a decision. P likes to go with the flow and given the choice want to gather more data. J in the extreme will jump to conclusion with the first little bit of data. In the extreme P will continue to gather data until the search is exhausted and only then decide

A strong J will do almost anything to avoid revisiting a decision. A strong P never met a decision they wouldn't be willing to do over. Js feel better after a decision and are apt of overlook important details while gathering information. Ps usually feel better during the process of gathering information and are apt to second guess.

How do these factors play out in a marriage? Let me tell you from experience. When my P wife would say, "Dinner is ready." I, the J in this marriage, would drop what I was doing and come to the table. However, in my view dinner was far from ready. It was in fact still cooking or my wife would have been already distracted by several more choices of how to serve it.

By contrast if I was cooking and said, "Dinner is ready." It was on the table and quickly getting cold. My wife would be finishing something and on the way from the bedroom to the dining area would start a load of laundry, write a note to the mailman, and feed the dog.

Dinner is now more of a pleasure because of Personality Type education. Now when I cook I give her the good old football two minute warning. "Honey it will be ready soon." This is followed by, "The table is set." Then I might ask, "What do you want to drink? Now when my wife says, "Dinner is read." I come to the table with different expectations. I come to help with the preparation. I set the table and dish out the food.

Knowing about Type can get you to church on time and help you pick movies to watch. If you are the J don't give your P spouse four choices. Make a suggestion and be willing to move on if it is not acceptable. Similar adjustments can be made for all kinds of conflict areas.

Avoid both procrastination and jumping to conclusions by working together! Remember that their weakness is your strength and visa versa.
