Genevieve Behrend once wrote, "It may be a very small circumstance, but it is the direction and not the magnitude that is to be taken into consideration."
This quote was taken from Ms. Behrend's work called "Your Invisible Power."
The first step to making change is to create a vision for your life. Once that is done, she explains, you will see that the conditions required to bring that dream into a reality already exists or that they will be imminently seen. When something arises that requires you to do something, she explains that "action" in accordance with your vision is required. Does that make sense?
When talking about living our vision and achieving our goals, we often take the stance that everything has to line up perfectly before we can embark on our journey. As though all the traffic lights were required to be green for us to leave our driveways. It is an all too common approach. How many times have you heard someone you know, maybe even yourself say, "when the time is right", "when it comes together", or "when the opportunity presents itself"? Maybe you have even thought you couldn't start because you didn't know how you were going to get to the outcome you desired.
Have you heard that luck is "opportunity" met with "preparation?" It's true, we wait for opportunities to present themselves, but that's not what the problem is. The challenge lies in the lack of preparation. We fail to prepare. We define preparation as "acting in accordance with your vision." Whatever you can do in this moment, or as new conditions present themselves. It's key to the process for two reasons. What good is an opportunity to us if we aren't prepared for it? And simply stated, being prepared can create opportunities that we otherwise might not have experienced.
When we are approached to invest or partner in someone's business, our first response is always the same. "What is your business plan and what steps have you taken already?" Obviously, these are things we would want to know before making any decisions but there is another, more subtle reason for this question.
We want to see if they are practicing the principles we are discussing here. An overwhelming majority tell us that they have taken no steps or have no business plan because they were unsure of how to get the business off the ground... often they add that they were hoping we could help them with those issues.
Some come to us with a plan, though it might require a lot of revisions, we're encouraged. It's not about whether or not the plan will work, it's that they've taken the time to do something to see their dreams come true. We would rather be given an incomplete plan than no plan at all.
Why would we want to work with someone who doesn't want to risk being wrong? Why are we expected to put in more energy than they are willing to? It's their business! We look for people prepared to succeed.
If you were asked, "How do you walk 1000 miles?" We're sure your response would be, "By putting one foot in front of the other!" You may think it's a joke, but it's the perfect analogy for what we're talking about and what Ms. Behrend means in her quote. Just take the first step, no matter how small.
This is a powerful concept you deserve to grasp. Do not get hung up on trying to figure out the best way to cut corners. Do not try to calculate every move that has to be made before taking action.
Take ANY step NOW! Put just one foot in front of the other and continue to do so. Leave NO stone unturned along your path. Following any clue, no matter how insignificant it may be, can make more of an impact in your achievement than you could ever imagine ahead of time.
Start now! Begin the journey today. It doesn't matter what the first step is, only that you take it. Buy a book, do research online, call a friend with experience or write a plan, mission statement or a to-do list. It's still a step in the right direction.
Action equals momentum. Create your own success by stepping in the direction of your desire.
