There has been a lot talk on the web lately about Florida having the highest incidence of weird news. Not just in quantity but in the quality of weirdness as well. Remember the bikini-clad lady who had a temper tantrum at McDonald's because she thought her service was too slow? That was in Florida. Or how about the American Alligator that showed up in Venice, Florida covered in bright orange paint? Yes, the Sunshine State seems to be home to some very odd happenings. It seems fitting then, that there are several decidedly odd attractions.
World's Largest Shuffleboard Courts
If shuffleboard is your thing, well then we salute you. Plan your next trip for St. Petersburg, bring all the ladies and gentlemen from the local shuffleboard club and don't forget the visors! This place is the mecca of shuffleboard. Organize a tournament, bring a picnic basket, have a ball! Once you have played your little heart out, head inside to the World Shuffleboard Hall of Fame. Pay tribute to the legends of the game, have a cup of coffee and take a load off your feet.
Las Margaritas Grill
The American Revolution ended in 1783, but patriotism is still just as rampant in this little establishment. Located in Homosassa Springs, the Las Margaritas Grill calls itself the most purely patriotic business in the state of Florida. That label seems a tad askew considering the Spanish name they chose for the grill. Apparently every Friday and Saturday night everyone in attendance is given an American flag and asked to take part in an enthusiastic rendition of God Bless America, I'm Proud To Be An American, God Bless the USA and of course the Star-Spangled Banner. Anyone not willing to stand and take part in the singing and flag waving is kicked out. Literally.
Mini Golf with Live Gators
Sure that sounds like a blast! Who doesn't love an exciting game of mini golf! Castles, little bridges, water hazards to avoid and now alligator hazards too?! Now that is my kind of golf! Only in Sarasota, Florida can one go for a leisurely game of mini golf and have it turned into a life or death scenario with the putting of a golf ball. If you survive your entire round with all body parts intact, then there is the opportunity to purchase raw meat to feed the alligators who had previously wanted you as a meal during your game.
In part two we have such Florida oddities as the Parisienne McDonald's and Boat n' Trailer Racing. Could there really be such things? The internet says so! Stay tuned!
