I recently took a vacation to the California desert resort known as Palm Springs. This was my first visit to the California desert and I was soon to learn that the heartbeat of this desert city is Palm Canyon Drive.
On Palm Canyon you will find many varieties of shops, galleries and restaurants that tickle every taste bud and attractions that make Palm Canyon Drive a wonderful and memorable experience to be shared.
The immediate thing that meets your eyes was the tall, light-covered palm trees that gently shaded the street that sat next to the majestic Mt San Jacinto mountain range. It was this site that created a friendly and fun atmosphere that pulled me in. This was a place were I felt there was something for everyone, and it took one week to reveal the plethora of things to do.
Every week on Thursday nights the street closes down for the very popular weekly event - Village Fest. This is where local and tourists like myself come together in the Palm Springs downtown area, and enjoy the fantastic music that accommodates the over 100 arts, crafts, and food venders. I was also able to enjoy the many produce and flowers that were sold freely at a respectful price.
Palm Canyon Drive has other entertainment from such places as the Annenberg Theater, The Palm Canyon Theater, The Palm Springs Follies, and the Spa Resort Casino, which showcased a number of musical and comedy acts each week.
In January, Palm Canyon Drive is the focal point for the world-famous Palm Springs International Film Festival. Other events where Palm Canyon Drive is the central staging area is the Tour de Palm Springs, McCormick's Classic Car Show and Auction, the Crossroads Palm Springs Old World Renaissance Festival, The American Heat Bike Weekend, the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, as well as the Festival of Lights Parade that takes place during the holiday season. This annual event brings lighted floats, equestrians, bands, autos, and celebrities to celebrate the deserts own winter happenings.
One of Palm Canyon Drives most romantic attractions to take part in is the horse carriage. Here, I was transported around by a beautiful four-legged creature in a nostalgic decorated carriage through the downtown area. This comfortable jaunt with a special somebody was truly a moment to be remembered and an opportunity to observe Palm Canyon Drive.
This main downtown street also has a host of museums, clubs, bars, lounges, and live music to be indulged by all. Some of the more popular places I visited on Palm Canyon Drive were the Village Pub, Las Casuelas Terraza, O'Leary's Pub and Grill, Palm Spring Art Museum, and the Hair of the Dog Pub. Each place had their specialty when it came to clientele, drinks, food, and entertainment. Some of the more notable food spots were the Chop House, Riccio's Steak and Seafood Restaurant, Peabody's Coffee Bar, and LG's Prime Steakhouse, each inviting a taste of what Palm Springs has to offer.
When visiting Palm Springs, Palm Canyon Drive is must be visited. It is here you can feel the pulse and experience of this desert city.
