We have all been there. Those dates that can be so promising and then suddenly you come to realize that you're not going to get another one. It's hard enough even setting up the first date to begin with. You can't have all that effort wasted because you were too eager or said the wrong thing.
The problem is that it's so hard to figure out where you messed up. Was it what you wore? Too much cologne? Too many questions? There are a lot of ways to screw up the first date. Trust me ... I'm guilty of commiting just about every first date blunder there is to make. And that's why I want to share with you the things I've learned.
Be Cool
The first way to help your first date go smoothly is to relax. Of course you're both nervous, but is she acting that way? Right, then neither should you. It's totally natural to get excited about a first date, and to be nervous for sure. But if that's all that you show, you're not going to be giving her any way to get to know you.
But Not That Cool
You do want to appear to be interesting to your date, though. Staying cool doesn't mean you shouldn't seem to be engaged in the conversation. Make eye contact and ask polite and appropriate questions. In short – act like a man because that's what she expects you to be.
Keep the Conversation in the Present
One really easy way to scare a girl off is by getting ahead of yourself and mentioning marriage or kids. Nothing will ever come of talking about these subjects on the first meeting, so stay away. On the other hand, you don't want to seem too caught up in the past either. A quick mention of high school or college is fine here and there.
But if that's all you're able to contribute to the conversation, you'll be giving the clear impression that you're only interested in reenacting those glory days. In short, you'll look like you never grew up and have no life, and it's not too hard to see why that's a huge no no to your date.
Take Her Somewhere Quiet
You don't have to be too crazily romantic, but your first date should definitely be in a place where you can talk. Stay away from noisy bars with tons of distractions. Nothing will make your first date turn awkward quickly like not being able to have a conversation with one another because of noise. It can be hard enough to keep the conversation flowing along without having to overcome your environment too.
