Some very rich people use philanthropy to champion social causes, thus addressing challenges in society. However, the majority of people cannot do this, so they question how to make a difference in the world.
Without abundant wealth, which really represents power in this modern age, any individual can make their own contribution to society in a number of ways. Heroes do not have to do big things; everyone cannot be like Mother Theresa or Robin Hood.
Mahatma Gandhi said we should be the change we want to see in the world. This means that we can simply treat every human being as we would wish them to treat ourselves. The old adage; do as you would be done by, comes in to play.
By constantly being respectful, compassionate and honest, we create a world that treats us with respect, consideration and honesty. It is not difficult when we are centred and peaceful. When we are confronted by someone who is offensive, selfish and dishonest, it can be really challenging. These encounters can be considered opportunities to test the firmness of our principles.
If we want our children to inherit a clean and healthy environment, we should go beyond simply recycling. Keep that old cell phone, that scruffy-looking rattle-trap of a car, or update the look of an outfit by taking up the hemline. This approach avoids the rampant consumerism that depletes resources and adds to the waste our society generates.
Those who have time available or are unemployed can develop food-gardens or help others by volunteering for community causes. The small contributions of many people can make a difference. At the end of each day, we can feel rewarded by knowing that we have given the best of ourselves. This is an easy path to take and it teaches us that small is beautiful.
