Event photography has more demands than other sorts of photographic duty assignment. The size of the event has the greatest impact on the job, and may demand one, two, or even an entire team of photographers specially when there are parallel activities to cover for one whole event. As a client, you do not want to compromise the quality of work the photographer can carry, and you know you are in good hands if these five items are masterfully taken cared of:
Special moments. Event photography need not only be a chronological documentation of activities happening within an event. More critical than that are unique and tender moments which present the over-all feeling event players and invitees felt while being at the event. When they see the photos, they will recall how they felt as though they were in the moment again. Catch laughter, tears, triumphs and excitement.
People. This is not hard for event-goers to admit: they go to events for vanity reasons. And so, society pages of local dailies are peppered with poses here and there of who-and-who rubbing shoulders with the top bananas of company so-and-so. Just next to emotions in significance, in event photography, photos of prominent people going to the event are part of the bundle. In case of a corporate event, it may help with brandmark or corporate image. In case of a personal event, the pictures of people who attended the event serve as a souvenir to be treasured for generations.
Documentation of activities. Event photography also takes being able to document every single activity as planned in the programme. The advisable way to do this is to review the programme ahead of time and identify the personalities in attendance. The day or night of the event can be very interfering, particularly for big ones awaiting a larger attendance. So when the photographer gets the opportunity to take solo shots particularly of the outstanding guests, he should be able to grab his camera, aim and shoot. This should make it more viable to complete a documentation of all activities and of everyone in attendance.
Gimmicks. Every event has a highlight, or special activities that draw "wows" from the crowd together. This should be the centrepiece in event photography where the activities encompassing the event are concerned. The photographer can play this up and be imaginative about how to show that the gimmick was so breath-taking even on a flat photograph.
Changes In The Event. No matter how event organisers attempt to make everything work as planned, some things can go beyond their control. And so event photography should constantly have a sensitivity to turn of events that may make the event more fascinating than how it presently is. Make sure to take shots of everything, and it is easy to take out those pictures which the client does not want to include in the final portfolio.
